Archie W. Ervin is a nationally recognized expert, commentator, and consultant on strategic planning, evaluation, and change management for diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education with over two decades of experience.
Ervin served as the Georgia Institute of Technology’s inaugural vice president for Institute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (IDEI) and chief diversity officer from 2010 – 2023. Prior to his appointment at Georgia Tech, he served as associate provost and chief diversity officer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1999 to 2010.
At Georgia Tech, he was a member of the president’s cabinet and was responsible for identifying institutional priorities, policies, programs, and initiatives that advanced the Institute’s inclusive excellence agendas for faculty, staff, and students. Under his leadership, Georgia Tech was recognized as a seven-time recipient of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award awarded by INSIGHT into Diversity. Additionally, Ervin served as GT’s president’s liaison for collaborations with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Atlanta and chaired the University System of Georgia’s Chief Diversity Officers Advisory Committee during his tenure.
Ervin was elected as President of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE) in 2016 and was re-elected in 2018 to a second term as president. During his tenure as President, Ervin led NADOHE to become the largest professional association of senior diversity officers in American higher education, with a membership of more than 1500 professionals representing more than 300 colleges/universities at the conclusion of his second term. Ervin was one of the original founding members of NADOHE and served continuously as either a board member and/or an officer from 2006 - 2020. In 2022, Ervin co-led NADOHE’s partnership with Coventry University in the UK to sponsor NADOHE’s first international conference in its history.
Ervin regularly presents at national and international conferences and provides consulting services to higher education institutions and private sector organizations on organizational climate/culture assessments and has conducted climate/culture/strategy assessments for major U.S. Research I universities throughout the U.S.
Recently, Ervin accepted and was appointed as an Editorial Board Member of Insight INTO Diversity, a leading diversity publication in the U.S.

Ervin earned his Ph.D. in Educational Organizations and Policy Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1999.
